The UK Has More Confucius Institutes Than Any Other Country. Why?
Thirty universities in the UK host Chinese Confucius Institutes (CIs), more than any other country. These institutes, originally created to teach Mandarin and promote Chinese culture, have stirred significant controversy in recent years. They are now at the center of debates about academic freedom, transparency, espionage, and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence. While many Western nations have scaled back their Confucius Institutes, the UK has taken a notably more lenient approach, even while security services warn of the risks.
